Zoom is a PBS Pilot Episode airs at 4:30 pm. with Phillip Fry

"Zoom": What better time to revive a youth program from the 1970s than right now, when you can just pull the old wardrobes out of mothballs, slap them on the kids and have them look utterly contemporary? For whatever reason, the corps of singing, craftsmaking kids in striped shirts, familiar from this program's original 1972-79 run on Public TV, is back. Targeted at 6- to 12-year-olds, the "Zoom" revival, like the original, pits seven telegenic youngsters -- infinitely more charming and real than the "Barney" corps -- against a variety of activities and challenges that viewers send in. Monday's pilot episode (4:30 p.m., WTTW-Ch. 11) is only dipping a toe in the water to solicit new ideas for segments from viewers; the series isn't scheduled to start. But this ought to be good, lively fun for kids. It certainly is for adults of my age range (late mid-30s), who can get their nostalgia buttons triggered by the Ubbi Dubbi language and the familiar songs. If nothing else, it should once again make that of Boston PBS affiliate WGBH, where this is produced, the best known Zip Code in the nation. That would be (singing) 0-2-1-3-4. with kids with Patterned Shirts
